Nordic News

To: Coaches, Players, and Parents of Nordic Soccer Club.

Welcome to the April 2007 edition of Nordic News and hopefully what will be the start of our outdoor season. Providing the weather clears up and it stops snowing!  We should be heading outdoors by the end of the month for both practices and games (Monday April 30 is the first scheduled day outside at the Tree Farm.)  Some teams have already played outdoor games and in our “Players in the news” section, you will find an update on how our teams have fared in those tournaments.

Nordic's 2nd Annual Dinner Dance and Silent Auction was a very successful event.  Over $11,000 was raised to benefit the Nordic Scholarship program. 120 Nordic parents enjoyed a great night of wining, dining and dancing into the late hours with many a great deal to be had through both the "Live Auction" and "Silent Auction" events. Nordic would like to thank The DDA Committee, Angie Faraci and all the Nordic parents that helped pull together this fun social occasion and help us raise such a significant amount of money towards a very worthy cause.  Thank you!

The 3rd Annual Nordic Ski Day, which was held at Bolton Valley Ski Resort on Sunday March 4th, was a huge success with just under 100 people showing up to take full advantage of discounted ski tickets for Nordic families. The weather co-operated and provided us with good conditions and plenty of snow to ensure a fun social occasion.

As we head outdoors, here’s a few useful websites to remember to keep track of schedules, scores and standings for the various leagues that our teams play in:

Vermont Soccer League: www.vermontsoccerleague.org

Super Y League: www.superyleague.com

State Cup: www.vermontsoccer.org

Vermont Amateur Soccer League: www.vermontamateursoccer.org

Tree Farm: www.treefarmsports.org  (to check for field closures.)

When weather may be an issue for practices at The Tree Farm, we will do our best to get the word out to team coaches and managers as quickly as we can. The Tree Farm will post any field closures on their site daily.  Nordic will also post any closures on the Nordic website (www.nordicsoccer.org) or you can call the Nordic Club number (802) 288 9577 and listen to a recorded message. (No message means the Tree Farm is open.)

Plans are well under way for Nordic Cup 2007. Ross Duncan is the new tournament organizer and we currently have over 250 teams from throughout New England and Canada that have applied to enter the tournament. Nordic Cup is the clubs largest event of the year and attracts some of the best teams in the region to the Burlington area for the June 16-17 weekend and brings in over 15,000 people and about three millions dollars to the Chittenden County area.

The Soccer Center will be closing its doors on Tuesday April 17 after a very successful winter season. We had a total of 560 teams play in the Futsal or 7v7 leagues as well as the many successful tournaments that were held throughout the winter. We would like to thank all the Nordic parents who came in at all hours to help roll/roll-up carpet.

Players in the News

Many of our teams have already started their outdoor seasons and it’s only early April! Jesse Cormier’s’ 17 Premier Girls got the ball rolling when they traveled down to Richmond, Virginia to participate in the prestigious Jefferson Cup. Despite 3 losses, Cormier stated that the team played very well considering it was their first outdoor games in 4 months and against some very good competition.

Three of Nordic’s younger boys’ teams got their feet wet when they attended the Seacoast Spring invitational the last week-end of March. Ross Duncan’s U12 Boys went 1-3 with losses to FSA (CT) 1-2 on an Alex Fyles goal, West Hartford (CT) 0-8 and NEEFC 0-4. Not to be outdone, they rebounded in their final game with a 4-3 win over Oakwood (CT) with doubles from Danny Samardzic and Shane Haley.

The 13 Premier boys also went 1-3. After a heart-breaking 0-1 loss to Seacoast (NH) on a last minute goal after some tough defending, the 13 Boys were given an education by a very good PDA (PA) team with a 0-6 loss. They rebounded very nicely though with a fantastic 2-0 win over Bruno United (RI) on 2 Nate LeClair goals and finished with a tough 0-3 loss to a very technical FSA (CT) team.

Jim Goudie’s 15 Premier Boys must have decided that a 1-3 record was the way to go, as they too followed a 1-4 loss to Coastal (ME) on an Erich Schwer goal with a 0-1 loss to Classics (NH) and a 1-0 win over FSA (CT) thanks to an energized Awil Hussein goal. A 0-2 loss to Bruno (RI) followed but 4 outdoor games against some quality opposition in late March/early April is a huge bonus.

The 15 Premier Boys even came away from the tournament with the Sportsmanship Award for their age group after points awarded from officials during their 4 games.

Wade Jeans 17 Premier Boys had a very successful outing in their first College Showcase of the year at the MISL College Showcase at Fort Dix, NJ. They went 3-1 against some tough opposition and several players showed very well for the watching College Coaches.

Five more Nordic players have made their commitments to colleges for the upcoming year with local schools benefiting the most. Kate Richardson (17 Premier Girls) has committed to UVM and in a typo from a previous Nordic News, Taylor Rand is going to play at Lafayette in PA. St. Michaels College will be adding 3 Nordic players to their rosters this coming fall. Blake Schill and Robin Pierce (19 Premier Boys) have both committed to the Purple Knights for the next four years and so has Jess Valley (18 Premier Girls). Schill and Pierce will be joining former Nordic players Jason Burnett and Tom Griffin on the Men’s squad while Valley will be joining Kelly Boyden on the Women’s team.

There are three age groups where we are able to add some players: Our U10 Girls, U14 Boys and U12 Boys have some spots. If you know of any players that might be interested please have them contact Angie Faraci at angie@nordicsoccer.org or Jim Goudie at jimgoudie@nordicsoccer.org or call us at (802) 288 9577.

Coaches don’t forget to e-mail your team/player stories/achievements to Jim Goudie at jimgoudie@nordicsoccer.org no later than the end of the month.
