Nordic News

To: Coaches, Players, and Parents of Nordic Soccer Club.

Welcome to the first edition of Nordic News for the new 2007-08 soccer season. Welcome back to all the returning Nordic soccer players and parents and welcome to the club to all new Nordic players and parents. Nordic News is a monthly publication during the Nordic soccer year aimed at keeping all of our families up to date with what’s going on with-in the club and to highlight our players and teams achievements. Please feel free to send any stories about any of our players and/or teams to Jim Goudie at thecalfee@aol.com.

For the next four and a half months, we will be based at The Soccer Center at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds in Essex Junction. All of our teams will practice and play in either 7v7 or Futsal leagues

at The Soccer Center. For all league schedules please visit www.thesoccercenter.org.

For Nordic team practices/pool training and goalkeeper practice dates and times The Nordic website (www.nordicsoccer.org) has an indoor training calendar for your convenience.

Since we held our try-outs in August and September, we have been very busy organizing our teams. We are very happy to announce that we have seen a record 33% growth and now boast 24 teams this year as well as our very popular U8 and U3/4 programs. This all adds up to a potentially good year both on and off the field. Our coaching staff is as strong as ever and one that we are very proud of. Led by Jesse Cormier, Nordic’s Director of Coaching, the Nordic coaching staff is stronger and more experienced that it has ever been. A full list of Nordic’s coaching staff and their bio’s can be found on the Nordic website.

New to Nordic this year is our 3 and 4 yr old program. Under the guidance of Jesse Cormier, this co-ed program meets every Monday at The Soccer Center from 4pm to 5pm for one hour of fun, skills and games as a gentle introduction to soccer. There are spaces available and interested players should contact Nordic soccer at 288 9577.

If ever there was a great example of “what comes around, goes around” then 4 of our new coaches this year must be it. Kelly Boyden and Jess Valley are both former Nordic players and both now play for the Women’s soccer team at Saint Michaels College. They are going to be coaching our 14 Spirit Girls team this year. Sam Piotrowski and Tomy Szczypiorski also came up through the ranks at Nordic before going onto successful college soccer careers at Boston University and Wake Forest respectively and have now returned to coaching with our 11 Premier Boys.

Ross Duncan has taken over from Angie Faraci as Nordic’s Director of Operations. This will be Ross’ second year with the club after having organized the Nordic Cup last summer. Angie has returned to teaching and will remain with Nordic as the Head Coach of our 11 Premier Girls. Sadly, we have to say good-bye to Kerry Dziczkaniec who has resigned as Head Women’s Soccer Coach at UVM. We wish Kerry the best of luck with her future and would like to thank her for all the hard work that she has put into the club over the last few years.

PLAYERS IN THE NEWS.

In this section we like to highlight current and former Nordic players and teams achievements.

Our 12 Premier girls got their season off to a fantastic start when they won the highly rated Bethesda Invitational Soccer Tournament in early November. After playing to two 0-0 draws on the first day against BRYC Phoenix from Arlington VA and the host Bethesda, MD, Nordic then advanced to the final with a 1-0 semi-final win over Olney FC out of Maryland. In the final, Nordic scored 2 goals in the first 10 minutes and another before the end of the first half for a 3-0 lead at the half and for a final 3-0 victory in a re-match of their game against the host,
Bethesda.

With the tournament victory the Nordic 12 girls team are now ranked 16th in the region. Todd Wennar with Marcel Choquette as his assistant, coach the team. Team members include:
Kate Cole, Kylie Aither, Charlotte Stuart, Addison Wennar, Mallory L'esperance, Ashley Lauziere, Nicole Deorsey, Audrey Moorehouse, Madison Corley, Haley Forkey, Kayla Holbrook, Erin Turner, Brook Phillips, Anna Bauer and Kristi Chapman.

3 Nordic players will be in Orange Beach, Alabama this week participating in the NCAA Division 2 final four. U-19 Nordic teammates Amy Triano (University of Tampa) and Kelsey Dumont (Franklin Pierce) are on opposite sides of the bracket. Tampa plays #1 Grand Valley and Franklin Pierce plays #2 Seattle Pacific. Also, Connor O'Brien, Nordic U-18, will be there for the men's side of Franklin Pierce.

17 Nordic players have been selected to the Y League National ODP Camp in Cocoa Beach, Florida next January and February 2008.

The players were selected based on their play during the past season in the New England division of the Y league and were recommended by regional scouts and coaches. Good luck to all of our players.

Congratulations to both UVM and Middlebury Men’s Soccer teams on outstanding seasons. Middlebury won the NCAA Division 3 National Championship in Florida whilst UVM, with considerable support from Nordic players and parents, advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA Division One play-offs before succumbing to University of Connecticut.
