Nordic News

To: Coaches, Players, and Parents of Nordic Soccer Club.

Welcome to the January 2007 edition of Nordic News and a very belated Happy New Year to all our Nordic players and parents. In this months edition we will be wrapping up the High School soccer season with news of accolades that Nordic players have achieved, we have news on the Jarred Williams Tournament which was a very successful tournament for Nordic teams and information on upcoming events.

Second Session dates

Please take the time to check the training calendar on the Nordic website (www.nordicsoccer.org) for dates of practices and Pool Training sessions during the 2nd session at The Soccer Center. Due to CVE events and shows during the next 2 months, The Soccer Center is open and closed on various dates. Hopefully, team managers and coaches are keeping every-one informed as to practice/game dates etc, but the dates on the Nordic calendar and The Soccer Center website (www.thesoccercenter.org) are up to date and accurate.

Upcoming Events

The Soccer Center has two tournaments in the very near future for all Nordic teams to consider.

Mid-Winter Futsal Classic   Saturday January 27th U8 Co-ed, High School Boys & Girls and Men’s & Women’s

Sweethearts Soccer (7v7)       Saturday February 10th U12, U14, High School and Adult ALL CO-ED!

The dates for the Nordic Cup have been announced with our clubs largest fundraiser being held on the week-end of June 16th and 17th at the Tree Farm and various other locations through-out Burlington. Last year was our biggest ever tournament with over 215 teams from all over New England. This year, Angie Faraci, Nordic’s Director of Operations, is the tournament organizer. Nordic is dependent on the help of all of our families to make this tournament as big a success as it is, so please make sure to help out with your teams contributions over the next 5 months.

We are also in the process of finalizing the date for our 2nd Annual Club Dinner Dance which last year raised over $15,000 with all proceeds going to the Nordic Scholarship Fund. Each year, the club grants over $20, 000 in scholarships to various players for financial reasons and again Angie Faraci will be heading up a list of parent volunteers to make this years event just as successful.

One other “social” event is our 3rd Annual Nordic Ski Day which this year, will be held at Bolton Valley Ski Resort on Sunday March 4th. Now that the snow has finally arrived, come and join us for a fun day with Nordic players and parents receiving 50% off lift tickets.

There are two age groups where we are still able to add some players: Our U10 Girls and U14 Boys Developmental have some spots. If you know of any players that might be interested please have them contact Angie Faraci at  angie@nordicsoccer.org or Jim Goudie at jimgoudie@nordicsoccer.org  or call us at (802) 288 9577.

Players in the News

The U12 Girls 7v7 “A” League Session One final was a showdown between the Nordic U11 and Nordic U12 Premier teams.  Nordic U11 commanded the first half of the match and went up 2-0 before giving up a late goal. Energized by their score, the determined Nordic U12 team applied good pressure near the end of the game, but came up short of scoring on a last second shot at the buzzer.  It was a great game by two evenly matched teams.  Congratulations to the Nordic U11 Premier Girls team and coach Todd Wennar on their 2-1 victory!

Congratulations to Amy Triano (Northfield HS and Nordic 18 Premier Girls) who was selected to the NSCAA All Scholar All American team. Triano was the only player from New England selected by the National Coaches Association to this team. Her dad wanted  to thank the Nordic staff who have helped Amy to become a better player but full awards must go to Amy and dad for making the 80 mile round trip 2-3 times per week!

Former Nordic players are also making the news in the College ranks. Gordon College junior defender Hannah Hassler (Westford, Vt.) has been named to the New England Women's Intercollegiate (NEWISA) Division III First-Team for her efforts on the Fighting Scots women's soccer team last fall. This is Hasslers second year on the NEWISA first team. Younger sister, Beatrix, plays for our 15 Premier Girl’s team and Heidi for our U17’s.

This year is a very strong graduating class for Nordic with many of our players advancing onto college soccer. UVM Women will be the main beneficiary of our strong program with six players from our 18 Premier Girls team heading to the Catamounts. Gabby Bonfigli, Alison Hemphill, Emily Milbank, Lindsey Mucia and Karli Houston will be joining Nordic and UVM Head Coach Kerry D and freshman goal-keeper Eliza Bradley. Fellow 18 Premier Girls team mates Kristen Marek and Ashley Ledoux have both committed to play College Soccer for the next four years at Castleton State. Meanwhile Ethan Morrow is off to Division One Powerhouse University of North Carolina Wilmington. Other announcements will be made very soon as to where our U18’s are playing College Soccer next year.

The Jarred Williams Tournament was a huge success for The Soccer Center with 52 teams taking part to make it the largest tournament to date and raising a good amount of money for The Jarred Williams Foundation (www.jarredwilliams.com).  Nordic teams had a very good showing with four of our teams winning titles and 2 others claiming runners up spots.

As for Mr. Tony Anderson, he is currently trying his luck out in Northern Ireland with Premier league team Larne FC. You can follow Tony’s career through the website at www.larnefc.co.uk.

Good luck to all our players who are traveling down to Cocoa Beach, Florida for Y League ODP National Camp over the next 3 weeks. Lukas Petersen, Seth Rebeor, Connor O’Brien, Conor Leland and Zach Rachlin are all going down from the boy’s side whilst Megan Cain and Mimi Eckenstein are representing the girl’s side.

Welcome back to Nordic and UVM goalkeeper coach Lou Stazi, who will be back working with our goalkeepers every Sunday. Lou took some time off to settle into a new job and take care of his new family but will be back working with our keepers on a regular basis. Gregg Olson will also be a busy man these next few months as he has finally proposed to his long time girlfriend Sarah and wedding plans for a ceremony in July near Stowe are well in advance.

Coaches don’t forget to e-mail your team/player stories/achievements to Jim Goudie at jimgoudie@nordicsoccer.org  no later than the end of the month.
