STATE CUP SPECIAL

To: Coaches, Players, and Parents of Nordic Soccer Club.

Welcome to the June 2006 edition of Nordic News which is packed with all the scores and information about our teams successes in the State Cup and at various tournaments over Memorial Day weekend.

Nordic Soccer Club continued it's dominance of Youth Soccer throughout Vermont when it claimed seven (7) State Championships this weekend in the Vermont Youth Soccer Championships. Held at the Tree Farm Soccer Facility in Essex and at St.Michaels College, Nordic girls teams came up very strong, claiming five of seven State Championships up for contention with titles in the 12 Girls, 13 Girls, 15 Girls, 16 Girls and 17 Girls age groups.

Nordic's 15 Boys and 18 Boys also came through with State titles. Nordic's Director of Coaching and UVM Men’s Head Coach, Jesse Cormier was very pleased with the clubs week-end performances: "We are very proud of our players and teams performances this week-end and look forward to representing the State at the Regional event later this month with dignity and pride"  The regional championships will be held in Virginia Beach, VA, June 30th through July 4th.

Pat Bernard’s 12 Premier Girls were the first to claim their state title. The 12 Girls won their semi-final game versus Mountain 3-0. Goals were scored by Taylor Goldsborough, Sienna Searles and Sophia Steinhoff. They won the championship match versus Burlington Lakers 5-1. Goals were scored by Taylor Goldsborough, Sophia Steinhoff (2), Lauren Bernard and Stacy Tomlinson.

Using their recent championship in the Avon Memorial Day Tournament as a launch pad, Hector Tamayo and Mark Ringey’s 13 Premier girls squad rolled through State Cup play winning the title with a 3-0 victory over the Burlington Lakers following a 2-0 semi-final win over a strong Far Post squad. The 13 girls used their fast-paced, pressure attack along with balanced defending and strong midfield play to decisively win their matches. Nordic's five tallies were spread among 4 different players emphasizing their total team effort during the weekend. This win and trip to Regionals signifies the achievement of a goal set by the team after last season's loss in State Cup qualifying.

Angie Faraci’s 15 Premier girls defended their state title successfully against Far Post in a 4-0 final. Midori Eckenstein scored a hat trick with Natalie LaClair adding the final goal. GK Brianna DeOrsey and Ricci Celia received a shutout. Not content with one State title, eight month pregnant coach, Angie Faraci led her 16 Premier girls to their State title (with a little help from Jesse Cormier!!!) Firstly, they beat Essex United 5-0 in their semi-final and then won the final 4-0 over Far Post. Kristin Schmidt had four goals on the day.

To round off a very successful weekend on the girl’s side, Kerry D’s (sorry “D”, not spelling your last name!) 17 Premier girls brought home their championship. In Sunday's final, the 17 Girls had an explosion of goals in the second half of the game to become a 5 time State Champion defeating Rutland Soccer Club 4-0. Lead by Gabby Bonfigli's 2 goals and two others scored by Amy Triano and Lindsay Mucia. Triano also tacked on an assist along with Emily Milbank, Karli Houston and Kelsey Dumont. While the Nordic Girls outshot the Rutland team 3-1, the midfield was relentless and the defense was solid lead by a tremendous display from keeper Eliza Bradley. Bradley not only posted a shut out, she dodged 2 PK's and stopped point blank rockets with a fancy display of acrobatic moves to once again send the team to a Regional Tournament.

On the boys side, the hero of the weekend, with-out doubt, was 15 Premier Boys goal-keeper, Lucas Pelcher who saved an amazing 5 (five!) penalty kicks in 2 shoot-out wins for Gregg Olson’s boys. In their semi-final against Upper Valley Lightning, Nordic led by 2-0 at one point until UVL scored twice to even the score, the second of which coming only minutes from the end of regulation. After yielding no goals in a 20-minute Golden Goal overtime the two teams went to a penalty kick shoot-out. The MVP of the weekend, Lucas Pelcher, took to the net and with Nordic making all of their penalty shots and Pelcher making two saves, Nordic were through to the finals against a formidable opponent in Far Post.

A little shaken from their previous match the team struggled to get things going and ended up 1-0 down eight minutes into the match. Ten minutes later Nordic committed a foul in the penalty box resulting in a penalty kick for Far Post. Again, Lucas Pelcher confidently assumed his role and came up with a third stellar penalty kick save of the day. This moment sparked a change and ignited a turnaround in a well-played match by both sides. With little time left in the first half, Nordic leveled the match 1-1 on a goal by midfielder Ross Gruber. A hard fought 40 minutes later the Final, just as in the semi-final entered sudden death Golden Goal overtime and again went to penalty kicks. With Nordic coming off a huge confidence building experience and with Pelcher in goal and a kicking order that did not miss a shot in the previous match. There were no surprises as the Nordic goalkeeper came up with two saves and all of the Nordic shooters buried their shoots to win the game and take the State Cup Championships for their 4th title in 4 years.

The other boys team to re-claim their State Championship was Wade Jean’s 18 Premier Boys who comfortably defeated Capital 3-0. Nick Mead and Gardner Morrow claimed first half goals and Morrow’s early second half strike sent the 18 Boys on their way to the State title for the 7th consecutive year.

TJ Mead’s 16 Premier boys lost narrowly in their final to Far Post, losing 2-1 with Tyson Ringey scoring Nordic’s consolation goal. Jim Goudie’s 17 Premier Boys also lost in their final, 2-0 against Far Post.

Nordic Director of Coaching Jesse Cormier is introducing a new award for player of the week for both the boys and girls teams. This week’s winner on the girl’s side is the 15 Premier girls Kristen Schmidt for her 4-goal tally in Sunday’s State Cup Finals and Lucas Pelcher on the boy’s side for his heroics in saving 5 penalty kicks in 2 games to help his 15 Premier boys win their championship.

If there were a coach’s award, it would be heading in Tony Anderson’s direction for his 2-goal tally in his Men’s League debut for Mount Mansfield. Anderson is joined by fellow Nordic coaches TJ Mead, Jason Leahy and Todd Wenna on the Mansfield team while Jim Goudie turns out (carefully chosen words!!!) for the Nordic 18’s in their Men’s league games. Katy Kruse also turns out for the Capital women’s team in the women’s league. A lot of these games will be played at the Tree Farm over the next 2 months, so keep an eye out and come watch your coaches exhibit their soccer skills!
