Nordic News

To: Coaches, Players, and Parents of Nordic Soccer Club.

Welcome to the May 2007 edition of Nordic News and a special edition full of news from this past weekends State Cup games. The club had a very promising weekend with 9 of our teams advancing to the finals and a further 2 more advancing to semi- finals. All the finals and remaining semi-finals will be held at the Tree Farm on June 2nd and June 3rd. Check out our “Players in the News” section for all the scores and game details.

2007-08 try-out dates released.

The try-out dates for next years older team have been announced. We will be hosting our try-outs for our U15 and older Boys and Girls teams at the Tree Farm during the week of July 30th to August 3rd.

This will consist of 2 try-outs with the possibility of a 3rd try-out if needed. We will be posting exact times and dates very shortly as well as announcing the dates for our younger teams try-outs.

Nordic Director of Coaching, Jesse Cormier, is also finalizing our coaching staff for next year with the prospect of a couple of substantial additions to our already highly qualified coaching staff.

Nordic is also very pleased to announce the start of 3 new programs to the club over the next few weeks.

Strikers Finishing School

In conjunction with our Goalkeeper practices, we will offer an additional free practice for players of all ages wishing to improve their shooting and finishing technique. Nordic coaches will work with players on the technical and tactical demands of being a forward to work on improving our forward’s goal scoring abilities.

6pm-7pm ...***Starting Monday June 4th*** at the Tree Farm
U14 + older Boys and Girls Mondays

Nordic Elite Summer Academy (*NESA*):

Paul Goodman has offered his services for strength and conditioning training to the club for three days a week starting on June 4th (M/W/TH) with the times in the late afternoon and TBA. The program will finish on July 26th. He has stated that he only wants to have the serious and dedicated involved. It will be basically eight weeks of strength work with approximately three sessions per week and the session cost will be $500.00 (the normal cost for this type of program is $1800 and above for the entire session). Paul has committed incredible energy and expertise to our club and has offered our young talents a great opportunity to develop mentally and physically.  Philosophy on this: We feel this strength program will really prepare our kids mentally and physically to impact their teams directly this summer. It will also put them in a great place going into their critical junior or senior seasons and as they prepare their college careers.

Captain's Practice programs:

As the Nordic staff, we will also be diligently selecting players in the club to have the option to attend UVM/St. Mike's men's and women's summer captain's practices/pick-up games. Again this is invite only as we have to make sure the level is high, and there is conformity during the pick-up games. The schedule will involve a couple of nights a week of small sided and full-sided matches.
Philosophy on this: We wanted to give the older higher-level kids in the club an idea and taste of the next level. During the process, we are hoping to open a learning opportunity for our club players (future college players) to interact and train with current college players. We feel the mental and physical demands will be high for our Nordic players to be pushed to achieve against some of the best college players in the area.

When weather may be an issue for practices at The Tree Farm, we will do our best to get the word out to team coaches and managers as quickly as we can. Players in the News

This past weekend was a very busy and successful time for most of our teams with 9 of our clubs teams advancing to State Cup finals.

Ross Duncan’s 12 Premier Boys won their quarterfinal game against Capital Black on goals by Noah Lieberman (2), Colin Turner and Shane Haley and were backed up by strong defense.
They then followed up by beating Synergy 3-0 to win their semifinal game and progress to the U12 Boys final. Goals by Colin Turner and Shane Haley and some great goal keeping by
Matt McBride were capped off by a Danny Samardzic goal late in the game.

Will Hayward’s 12 Spirit Boys team battled a strong Far Post Orange team but lost 8-1 against superior numbers.  Tanner Connolly accounted for the lone goal but the crossbar was
dented a couple of times by Cameron O'Connell.

Hector Tamayo’s U14 Premier Girls began their campaign to defend their State Cup championship with a 1-0 win over a determined Essex United squad in the quarterfinals, followed by a 5-0 semifinal win over Rutland. In the quarterfinal, Nordic went up 1-0 midway through the first half on a goal by Olivia Burritt finishing a Janelle McCann cross. Play was evenly split for most of the match with Nordic's team defense keeping Essex from tallying the equalizer. The Rutland team opted to play bunker defense in the semifinal match packing its players deep in its defensive third. Nordic came out strong finding scoring chances in the first half on goals by Janelle McCann and Jen Arnold. The second half saw Nordic countering Rutland's bunker defense by possessing the ball well through midfield and taking its scoring chances from outside the 18. Goals by Jenn Arnold, Michaela Bicknell and Abby Cole finished off the 5-0 victory.

TJ Meads 11 Premier Boys advanced to the U12 semi’s before falling to Far Post 12’s. In their play-in game, they beat Essex Utd 2-1 on goals from Jordan Lamay and Brett Nelson. Next up was a quarterfinal date with Capital and a 4-1 win. Strong defense from Tucker Jean and Stiles Alpeter kept Capital at bay, with goals coming from Matt Brien, Tuckey Shelly, Jordan Lamay and Zach Evans. The Far Post 12’s in a tight 1-0 loss in the semi-finals halted their brave quest.

Todd Wenner’s U11 Premier Girls, who were also playing up a year, advanced through to the semi-finals in the U12 Girls bracket. They beat Essex Utd 4-1 with goals from Erin Turner, Brooke Philips, Addy Wenner and Kylie Aither and then went one better against Mountain with a 5-1win on goals from Erin Turner, Madison Corley and Addy Wenner.Their run was ended in the semi’s by Far Post 12’s with a 2-0 loss despite being a very tight and well played game.

Jim Goudie’s 13 Premier Boys had a right old “ding dong” of a battle against Synergy and came out with an impressive 3-2 win. Nate LeClair and Jack Loud got the 13 Boys off to a great start and went up 2-0 inside of 20 minutes. Synergy fought back to make it 2-2 at halftime before a very cautious second half which could have swung either way. Nate LeClair had the last say with the game winner 5 minutes from time, to book the 13 Boys their place in the final.

Jesse Brady-Searby’s 12 Premier Girls advanced to the semis with a 4-1 win over Burlington Lakers before bowing out to Capital 1-0 in a close, hard fought game.

Jim Goudie’s 15 Premier Boys booked their spot in the final with an unconvincing 3-0 win over Capital. Erich Schwer tallied late in the first half with a diving header at the back stick before second half goals from Awil Hussein and Robert Wood ensured a flattering 3-0 score line.

Wade Jean added a few gray hairs to his balding hairline when his 17 Premier Boys were taken the full distance in their semi final date with Capital. After having been up 1-0 for a large amount of time thanks to a first half goal from Kenny Rutowski, Capital equalized in the 89th minute to take the game to overtime.

In the second half of overtime, Danny Bolam and Doug Yeates popped up with 2 priceless goals to ensure a 3-1 victory.

One of the biggest wins game from Kerry D’s 15 Premier Girls, who got revenge from last year, with a fantastic 1-0 win over Essex Utd. Michelle Finan was the hero with a superb finish inside the box late in the second half.

Connor O’Brien, who currently plays for our 17 Premier Boys and is graduating from MMU, has committed to playing soccer at Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire for the next 4 years.

Connor has been with the club since U11’s and will co-incidentally be playing for Franklin Pierce against his current Nordic coach, Wade Jean, who is the Saint Michaels Men’s coach as the two teams are in the same conference.

One more Nordic player has committed to the UVM Women’s soccer team for this upcoming fall. 17 Premier player Heidi Hassler will continue her soccer career at Vermont after four years at MMU where she was a three-sport athlete. As a senior, Hassler, a midfielder, earned all state and all-league honors and was named to the Twin State Team.

Nordic loves to share good and special news about both players and coaches – 15 Premier Girls Assistant Coach Jen Norton has announced her engagement to Scott Magnan on March 30, 2007. The wedding is set for May 3, 2008. Congratulations Jen and Scott!
